Summary: Located east of the Jordan River and west of Trachonitis, the region of Batanea was part of the northeastern province of Judea which came under the rule of Herod the Great in 37 BCE, then later inherited by his son Herod Philip in 4 BCE as part of the Herodian Tetrarchy (see MAP). Other territories included under Philip’s rule were: Trachonitis, Auranitus and Panias (Y:20:46).
