See: Abraham, Hagar, Ishmael, Sarah Refer to: Beginnings 27–29
Summary: God promised Abraham, that a great priesthood covenant would be established and made manifest through the lineage of a future son (B:24:21-28; B:26:7-18). As a fulfillment of divine prophecy (B:27:20-21), Isaac was born to Abraham and his wife Sarah when they were one hundred years and ninety years old, respectively (B:29:1-3).
Abraham had previously fathered a son named Ishmael with a woman named Hagar, Sarah’s handmaiden (B:28:1-4). According to scripture, this turn of events was inspired by the cunning words of one referred to as the “Son of the Morning”, who convinced Sarah to offer Hagar to Abraham in order to fulfill the promises of God (B:27:42-54).
In speaking with Abraham, an angel foretold of enmity arising between the houses of Ishmael and Isaac, as a result of Abraham’s “sin” (B:28:45-46, 53-54).
