Machaerus

Pronunciation:  meh-KEHR-uhs

Occurrences:  4

First Reference:  Yeshua 5:35

Therefore, O king, let us be wise concerning this man and send him under guard to Machaerus, for in that place shall he no more trouble the land, and all things will continue as before.”

See:  Herod Antipas, John the Baptizer

Summary:  Machaerus was an isolated military fortress located on the east side of the Dead Sea, about fifteen miles southeast of the mouth of the River Jordan. After John the Baptizer was arrested by Herod Antipas in the city of Jericho, he was sent under guard to Machaerus. Herod’s initial intent was to simply imprison the Baptizer, however, a delegation of scribes and Pharisees eventually convinced Herod to have John executed (Y:5:28-49).
