Summary: Zacharias was the father of John the Baptizer and a priest. According to Azrael’s Commentary, John’s public criticism of religious leaders and Herod the Great became such a threat that he began receiving messages from Herod and the rulers of the temple threatening that unless he stop his criticism of them, his father would be killed. John was not dissuaded by the threats, and tragically, Zacharias was murdered while officiating at the altar (AZC — John the Baptizer.
